About The Role
Bendigo Kangan Institute (BKI) is seeking expressions of interest from experienced and community-minded individuals to join our Animal Ethics Committee (AEC).
This is a unique opportunity to contribute your expertise and perspective to ensure the ethical, humane and responsible use of animals in teaching and training.
About the Committee
The BKI Animal Ethics Committee is an independent body responsible for overseeing all animal use across the Institute, ensuring compliance with national legislation and ethical standards.
The Committee plays a critical role in:
- Reviewing and approving animal-related teaching activities
- Monitoring animal welfare and care practices
- Providing guidance on ethical use of animals
- Reviewing reports and helping ensure compliance with the Australian Code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes and other relevant legislation.
Who we’re looking for
We are inviting applications from individuals who can contribute to one of the following membership categories:
- Veterinarian (Category A): a person with qualifications in veterinary science that are recognised for registration as a veterinary surgeon in Australia
- Scientific/Teaching Representative (Category B): Experience using animals in teaching or research
- Animal Welfare Representative (Category C): Strong commitment to and experience in animal welfare, independent of BKI
- Independent Community Member (Category D): No involvement in animal use or associated with the institute — brings a community perspective.

Time commitment
- Approximately 4–5 meetings per year (aligned to teaching term breaks).
- Meetings held in Broadmeadows or Bendigo (with virtual attendance available).
- Preparation required to review materials ahead of meetings
- Review of documents and email communications between meetings
- Attendance on campus, a minimum once per year for site visits

- Members are appointed for a term (with review every three years).
